submitted by Introduced in Black Flag and expanded upon in Origins and Odyssey, Points of Interest have become a detriment to the Assassin’s Creed series. It’s a relatively simple mechanic and used by many open-world games. While exploring the world, you’ll see question marks across the map and indicated on your HUD. Upon going to the location, you’re greeted with some experience points for discovery and a checklist of things to do (when applicable) to complete the location, which then grants more xp. It’s a simple trick to extend playtime, and seems to have worked on many fans of the new formula. This topic is really more of a prelude to a wider topic I’ll be discussing soon on the world design of the series, though was something I felt deserved its own thread, due to how damaging these are through the repetition, harm to exploration, and the breaking of the core gameplay loop.
The Damage Done Unfortunately, the damage has been done to the series already, largely claiming Origins and Odyssey as their victims. Whereas Black Flag and Rogue managed to keep the ? to primarily optional locations and encompassed full islands, we see Origins and Odyssey starting to change everything for these PoI. The core loop of “classic AC” was often rooted in narrative development. For more information on that, take a look at a previous post;
here. Modern AC is, however, more focused on the core loop being around the PoI. Every quest takes you to a point that’s marked out on your map. All content now begins to revolve around the completion of these PoI.
Think, if you will, back to Brotherhood. Imagine all the side content available. You have a fight club, gambling, guild quests, assassination missions, templar hunt missions, assassin contracts, rebuilding Rome, Borgia Towers, Lairs of Romulus, war machines, and guild synchronization. You also now had an animus training room, main mission optional objectives, and collectibles if you wanted more than all that. Despite all of the main side activities being reused across the map, each activity was unique, didn’t overstay its welcome, and brought fresh new experiences. Even the collectibles, while a bit grindy, were largely related to helping the narrative progression. All of this content didn’t stop from intricate set-pieces either; meaning that even though the gameplay was largely the same across the title, the player was always introduced to fresh new ways to use and experience that. The player wanted to complete the content for the experience and if they’re a completionist, to tick off that checkbox that the game added to aid the user.
Origins - to some extent - and Odyssey - to a much larger extent - do away with the large set pieces and scripted new ways of approaching situations. Odyssey, in fact, doesn’t include any real setpieces where gameplay can be altered in any fun ways, making all events happen in natural gameplay. Every battle is just another 300 man fight. Every assassination is just another cultist in the world. All of this was done in service to the points of interest. They now have replaced all Romulus lairs, Borgia towers, Leonardo machines, etc with a question mark on the map. The vast majority of which contain the same objectives “kill X# of person at Y rank” or “Open X number of chests”. People in the past would complain so much over the “pointless collectibles”, but rather than improve on them, they’ve been relegated to becoming necessary to gain xp while not adding meaning and removing other side content. The amount of repetition is insane.
Origins at least had the decency to make every location unique. While each one still broadly belonged to a possibility of bandit camp, military fort, or animal den, each location felt unique. In the end, while some of the forts were fun, the PoI were padding. The number of locations wasn’t obscene in origins though, clocking in with about 400 locations and 125 missions in the base game. Odyssey increases this to 600 locations and 300 side quests while removing set pieces. What follows is a very repetitive game that many fans have criticized for getting bored from due to the grind, and understandable sentiment when the vast majority of the game is focused on completing the same core objective 600 times. Unlike Origins, Odyssey ends up trying to take the easy way out, with many (noticeable) instances of exact same camp layouts appearing throughout the world. Origins and Odyssey end up showing a scary ideology, that bigger is always better, and quantity is more important than quality.
These issues are compounded by the damage the PoI do to exploration. Odyssey's map unlocks when locationa are in a 400-500 meter radius (I single out Odyssey as I forget the distance for Origins). Both Origins and Odyssey very closely live by the “rule of 40” a principle that you want something to happen every 40 seconds or so to keep the player engaged. So every 40 seconds they should find a new bandit camp. Well, this just happens to fall perfectly in the distances between locations being every 500 meters. So now we just beeline between every location, with no reason to explore in between. We know that nothing lies in the middle. All the big enemies, loot, exp, and chests are in forts and camps, meaning we just need to keep beelining. While doing this though, we don’t even need to touch the controller anymore. We set the location on the map, press a button and our pegasus horse is running through the forest for us for the next 40 seconds until we see another small bandit camp. Odyssey doesn’t contain exploration, it contains mindless traveling.
How to Fix It If Ashraf is the creative director as speculated, I’d believe he could fix the problems caused under the system due to his clear admiration and inspiration he’s mentioned from Zelda Breath of the Wild. Many gamers often cite BotW and Red Dead Redemption 2 as having amazing worlds. Despite the narrative issues in the most recent Zelda title, the world was beautiful and a joy to get lost exploring in, causing many gamers to lose hundreds of hours searching every nook and cranny of Hyrule. While I have not played the acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 (yet), it’s often cited for having a stunning handcrafted environment. Interestingly, neither title hits that “rule of 40”. If I remember correctly, BotW was close to 60 seconds, and RDR2 was nearly 120 seconds, yet both are critically acclaimed. Neither uses the type of PoI system AC has, instead of with important locations and fast travel points only appearing on your map after unlocking them.
We know open-world games can work without them, so I think that’s what should be tried in the next AC. Remove the question marks altogether and remove the constant repetitive bandit (or I guess Pict and Viking?) camps. This doesn’t mean we can’t still have a few castles, abandoned Roman Forts, and town scattered about, but make players find them themselves using exploration and viewpoints. Viewpoints should no longer just upgrade your eagle’s vision either, returning to form and unlocking areas of land on your map. Make the player still have to manually find each town though, and each quest by interacting with people rather than exclamation marks everywhere. I think the other really important part is to scale down a tiny bit, and handcraft the world again. Don’t use and AI alone to construct the environment. AC3’s frontier manages to be enjoyable to explore because it maintains the use of parkour. Use the natural forests of Scandinavia and England to your advantage, and let us climb trees again to explore (and not just on horseback), find birds-eye views, and scope out enemy forts from afar and above using our character. I’d also say that we should cut the eagle altogether, trading it for a Viking spyglass (which yes, may have been a thing due to crystals having been worked into lens optimal for proto-telescopes found in Visby).
The point of all of that is to put a re-emphasis on players exploring for themselves, and building experiences rather than experience points. Let the level building exp come from killing enemies (maybe add more stealth bonuses), and completing quests. Most importantly, reward players for going out of their way to find something. Maybe a mid-sized castle in Wales that the player will never be brought to actually contains one of the best swords in a hidden chest. But don’t telegraph that to the player. Let us figure it out for ourselves. Secrets like this also then have the potential of sparking greater community engagement, just like the original Legend of Zelda did over 30 years ago.
Kingdom/ Ragnarok has the potential to be great but needs to fix these pain points found within the current formula or risk burning out fans.
